Republican infighting in Mississippi

After a bruising GOP runoff election for U.S. Senator, current MS Senator Thad Cochran has retained his position and will face Travis Childers (Democrat) in the next senate election. The MS GOP is fractured and torn by infighting, and the far right Tea Party faction as represented by Chris McDaniel is definitely not in a conciliatory mood.
A sad development in this story is that the person who was in on the conspiracy to photograph Cochran's wife (a dementia patient) in a nursing home has, according to official reports, committed suicide.

Mississippi universities, however, breathed a collective sigh of relief that Cochran retained his position, as he has been instrumental in bringing much needed federal monies to Mississippi. Indeed, the Research Park at Mississippi State University is named after Thad Cochran. Close to 50% of Mississippi's state budget comes from the federal government.

Rumor had it that MSU could have lost anywhere from 300 to 700+ jobs if McDaniel would have defeated Cochran. It also appears that enough black Democrats voted for Cochran to have propelled him to victory. This does not sit well with the Tea Party. Indeed, some of them with ruffled feathers are threatening to vote for the Democratic senatorial nominee.

It remains to be seen if the rift in the GOP can be healed, or if the Tea Party will be the mouse that throws the GOP elephant into a political frenzy. A mad elephant is a danger to everyone around it... and of course cleaning up after it is the worst job in the circus.

I spoke too soon. Seems McDaniel is not going away. Lots of hard feelings down here. One old time GOP operative told me that 'this is going to split the Republican Party in Mississippi'. One can only hope.

Most Mississippians hope that the McDaniel hissy fit is over now that a judge has dismissed the case. However, McDaniel is scheduled to hold a news conference Tuesday and announce whether they'll try to take it to the Mississippi Supreme Court.
Hopefully 'that dog won't hunt' and this whole episode will be history soon. We hope.
