Kevin Swanson encourages Christian educators to break law and push religion on kids
cross-posted at dKos
Kevin Swanson of Generations Radio was in rare form on his podcast yesterday. He decried the numerous Supreme Court decisions that have resulted in government-mandated prayer being barred from the public schools. That's to be expected. But Swanson went one step further. He actually encouraged Christian teachers and school administrators to disregard those decisions. His argument? Those decisions impose a "false religion" of humanism, and any educator who ignores them is obeying God's law. He also claims that the reason our country is going in the wrong direction is that several generations of kids haven't grown up with the fear of God. Listen here (warning, self-downloading MP3). |
It's not news in and of itself for fundies to wring their hands and gnash their teeth over Engel v. Vitale and related decisions. After all, it's pretty much an article of faith among the fundie fringe that Sandy Hook happened because kids aren't forced to pray. But to my knowledge, this is the first time I've actually heard a fundie encourage teachers to defy the law. Swanson even admits that teachers who go down that route will likely be fired in short order. However, in his view, those who don't are part of the problem. His argument is that the fear of God is the beginning of all knowledge, and Christian teachers who don't teach the fear of God are dangerous to this country's future.
Swanson's co-host, Dave Buehner--the same guy who thinks gays should be treated the same as murderers--even went as far to suggest that a Christian teacher should encourage parents to pull their kids out of school if they aren't being taught the fear of God. So what if one of their students happens to be Jewish, Muslim or atheist? Apparently that consideration doesn't matter to Swanson. Then again, we are talking about a guy who thinks 9-11 was orchestrated to get a Muslim in the White House, gays want to give homeschooled kids to pedophiles, and that women on birth control have the remains of fetuses in their wombs. Sounds to me like Swanson is Exhibit A for why the religious right needs to be marginalized.
