Before there was a Response, there was Governor Perry's Restoration Project. Perry sits atop a GOP state platform that wants to pull out of the U.N., do away with Social Security and destroy minimum wage laws. Perry's Texas Restoration Projects were interesting to say the least. Perry would bash separation of church and state. He also advocated using churches to channel government money to the public. One meeting I attended had a Black choir singing a hymn begging God to forgive the nation for believing in separation. This is interesting because the Houston Chronicle reports Perry gave little to his own local church. Few reporters have looked into David Barton and his influence. At one Project Barton told the huge crowd that ministers could now be arrested in the nation for reading from the Book of Romans from the pulpit.
Does Perry believe like Barton that Blacks are supposed to be Republicans because the GOP gave us Civil Rights and Democrats were the party favoring lynching? Perry was once Al Gore's campaign manager. Will he move to the center if he keeps his numbers? Who knows? The fact that candidates have links with these types of mindsets deserves public exposure. Taking the time to find out who started the fire and who reported on it is a worthy goal for journalists.
