Lila Rose's Bus Tour to `Defund Planned Parenthood' Sets Up Dueling Demonstrations
"[I'm] at the Perth Amboy Planned Parenthood clinic, standing outside the `waist up' clinic investigated just two months ago" Rose said in a message on Twitter this morning. "I was here two months ago investigating. Now I'm here to speak out for the protection of unborn children and abuse victims." Rose, former Colorado congresswoman Marilyn Musgrave and SBA List staff "and local pro-life leaders will join forces to rally grassroots support for Reps. Joe Walsh (IL-08), Randy Hultgren (IL-14), Frank Guinta (NH-01), Ann Marie Buerkle (NY-25), Mike Kelly (PA-03), Patrick Meehan (PA-07) and Mike Fitzpatrick (PA-08)," LifeNews.com reported before the tour started. "Other stops will target those who voted against defunding Planned Parenthood, including Leonard Boswell (IA-03), Bruce Braley (IA-01), David Cicilline (RI-01), Jason Altmire (PA-04), Marcy Kaptur (OH-09) and Bill Owens (NY-23). "Congress can no longer hide behind the lie that Planned Parenthood puts women first, especially not when they've been shown to be repeatedly willing to aid in the sexual exploitation of young girls," Rose told LifeNews.com. "A vote to funnel federal dollars into this corrupt organization is a vote to make taxpayers accomplices in the exploitation of women and at a time when our country is broke. We commend our Representatives who have taken the first step by voting to strip Planned Parenthood of its taxpayer funds, and implore that they hold the line in negotiations with the Senate." According to LifeNews.com, "The tour is a part of a larger $200,000 grassroots campaign including radio and television ads thanking members for their votes to defund Planned Parenthood. The ad campaign launched on March 1 with a four-day $75,000 television ad airing throughout NY-25 and the Syracuse-area thanking Rep. Ann Marie Buerkle." Anti-abortion video contest Campus Progress recently reported that Live Action, along with several other groups including Students for Life of America, Survivors of the Abortion Holocaust, Rock for Life, Right to Life of Central California, Generations for Life, Pro-Life Action League, Susan B. Anthony List, Teen Defenders, Cherish Life Ministries, Stand True, Students for Life of Illinois, LIFEsocal, sponsored a "Tell Congress Why They Should Defund Planned Parenthood" video contest and it received "dozens of entries." "Now is it time - to show America why you think Planned Parenthood must be De-Funded," read a headline at the Students for Life of America website. "Create your own video to Tell Congress Why They Should De-Fund Planned Parenthood and then enter for a chance to win $1000! Creativity Encouraged!" Campus Press' Ryan Brown pointed out (http://campusprogress.org/articles/the_anti-abortion_movement_goe s_viral/) that although Rose's "gotcha" videos have been "widely and thoroughly discredited, ... [they] continue to rack up hundreds of thousands of hits on YouTube, and have made Rose into a darling of the right wing talk-show circuit. ... So it's no surprise that the `Tell Congress' Contest has inspired a legion of Rose fanboys and girls -- poised, passionate, and stunningly misinformed. "'[Thirty-one] percent of abortions are funded by your tax dollars,' the YouTube user Photographer4Christ informs us in a carefully done stop-action animation. [She should know that] ... in the United States nearly all federal funding for abortions is expressly prohibited by a restrictive piece of legislation known as the Hyde Amendment. "'If you want to have an abortion, pay for it yourself!' exhorts a similarly confused college-aged dude under the moniker ControversialWarrior. `Why is the United States being held financially responsible for it?'" "... [S]ince the government can't fund abortions, those tax dollars you cough up for Planned Parenthood each year hold you financially responsible for a number of other services funded by the sinister Planned Parenthood Industrial Complex, including cervical cancer screenings, birth control, STD testing, and pre-natal counseling," Brown explained. At most of Rose's tour stops she and Musgrave were met by supporters of Planned Parenthood. The organization put together its own "Truth Tour" that was intended to meet Rose's tour head on. It goes without saying that Lila Rose has the right to believe and espouse anything she wants to. What is troubling, however, is her seeming lack of interest in the truth or in ethics. She appears willing to say and/or do just about anything to press her anti-abortion beliefs forward.
