Netanyahu and Hagee, Serial Obstructionists
-Netanyahu's Christian Zionist support helps to explain why he believes that he can snub the Obama administration. The CUFI rally is a message that Netanyahu can organize Obama's political enemies. Christian Zionism is becoming an international phenomenon and Netanyahu may believe the growth of the movement will provide extensive political support for him to resist peace efforts. -Netanyahu has done this before. In 1998 Jerry Falwell and Hagee assembled hundreds of Christian Zionists at the Mayflower Hotel for a rally that Netanyahu attended before meeting with President Bill Clinton. But today's political climate is different and Netanyahu may be miscalculating. There is impatience with Netanyahu's intransigence, including inside the American Jewish community and from the U.S. military as seen in this Foreign Policy article on the CENTCOM briefing of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. -Christian Zionism is a complex issue which demonstrates the hazards of conflating anti-Semitism with objection to Israeli policy. If those who disagree with Israel's policies are anti-Semites, then conversely this would mean that these "pro-Israel" activists can not be anti-Semites. This illogical conflation is shortsighted. Christian Zionists are advancing their own prophetic agenda and the prerequisites include a "greater Israel" but also include the elimination of Rabbinic Judaism. Yet few American Jewish organizations will not take a stand against the underlying anti-Semitism in Christian Zionism, a decision which places Jews in a Catch-22 situation.
-There is an AIPAC Policy Conference starting in less than a week and Netanyahu is on the program. It is time for Jewish leadership to take a long hard look at the cost of the partnership with Christian Zionists, as well as the game that Netanyahu is playing by fanning the flames of millennialist zeal.
