The Book of Psalms is Your Training Manual For Praying People To Death

In this fascinating religious infommercial, evangelist Dale Sides explains that the Old Testament's Book of Psalms "tells us how to pray against wicked people and it's not 'now I lay me down to sleep.' Prayers against wicked people are called imprecatory prayers..." Until recently, "imprecatory prayer" was rare, perhaps due to the fact that it resembles what in pop-culture is typically thought of as "black magic." But, Christian death-prayers are coming into vogue, and Sarah Palin's in the loop. In fact, author of Theopalinism: The Face of Failed Extremism Leah Burton has characterized Sarah Palin's Alaska prayer group as Palin's own "death panel" and with some cause - as noted below, Palin's prayer network has waged imprecatory prayer against an alleged "witch."

Sarah Palin's personal prayer group leader described using imprecatory prayer in a 1995 bid to drive an accused witch out of the state of Alaska:"As we continued to pray against the spirit of witchcraft, her incense altar caught on fire, her car engine blew up, she went blind in her left eye, and she was diagnosed with cancer.". According to Mary Glazier, Palin joined her Wasilla prayer group in 1989, around the time according to Glazier that Palin decided to go into politics. According to a story in the February 2009 issue of Charisma Magazine, The Faith of Sarah Palin, Palin's friendship with Mary Glazier continued through into 2008.

During the 2008 election, and during he election would-be theocrats suggested praying for John McCain's death. In 2007, former Vice President of the Southern Baptist Convention Wiley Drake called for imprecatory payer against employees of Americans United For The Separation of Church and State. Then, in April 2009, a former US Navy chaplain called for prayers for the death of AU head the Reverend Barry Lynn and Military Religious Freedom Foundation Founder Mikey Weinstein.

Not to be outdone, On January 19th, 2009 (Martin Luther King Day), a day before  the inauguration of President Barack Obama Christian Identity leader Pastor Pete Peters declared an elaborate imprecatory prayer calling down the wrath of God on Obama's upcoming inauguration and the subsequent celebration (see YouTube video, parts 1 and 2. Peter's death-and-doom prayer is a the end of video #2.)

These are the same folks who have driven people out of their churches through abuse (those people are called walkaways) and caused all sorts of spiritual, emotional, and mental harm to the walkaways- their most wounded victims (and some walkaways don't survive!)  And now they're praying for evil for their "enemies".

This sort of stuff is downright horrible- and anti-Christian.  I don't think Teyose (Jesus) meant asking for harm when he said to love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you and to do them good.  I read that some early manuscripts instead say to bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you.  That is certainly not what is going on here.

It's certainly not turning one's cheek.

What they're "asking for" is that God would remove obstacles from their goals of world domination and for God to do THEIR will, instead of them seeking to do God's will.  They want to turn the rest of us into slaves serving THEIR churches and THEIR masters.

They don't realize just how evil they truly are.

I just wish that the general populace would start seeing them for what they are- and realize that yes, a church can be VERY evil!

The closest thing I can think to this were the imprecatory curses that some of the Israeli Right rained down on Yitzhak Rabin after attempting a peace agreement, and they must have thought their prayers were answered when Yigal Amir assassinated Rabin in 1995. Every major religious and non-religious ethical system has had its version of the Golden Rule, and the concept of imprecatory prayer rather violates this basic principle of living with others in a society. Besides, don't they realize that what goes around comes around?

As far as the hounding of accused witches, I can see this being used against anyone who doesn't quite fit in with the theocrats' vision of an ideal society. It reminds me of the Salem witch hysteria and John Winthrop's hounding of Anne Hutchinson out of Boston.

how long until they turn the curses inwards towards those not as fervent as they are?

I'm still trying to get my head around the idea that 'God knows who they are, but you have to pray for their death/destruction before God will erase their ass for you.'

Dr. Dale needs to see a psychiatrist. Watch some of the other videos which are all about a minute in length. He has all sorts of weird conspiracy ideas floating around his head. For one, he thinks Hitler was a Rothchild. Doctor, get back on your meds!

John Hagee claims Hitler was Jewish, but this pushes things even further. I guess Dale is unaware that Nazi propaganda targeted the Rothschilds ans claimed they were a vampiric force preying on the German working class.

...the scourge of all good, truthseeking people. I have, from time to time, observed fundamentalists decry euphemisms like "choice".

And here, I sense that they're trying to hide the hideousness of this proposition behind 10-dollar words.

"Cursing" your enemy? Oh, heavens no! Good Christians can't do that!

Engaging in "imprecatory prayer" against your enemy? Hm! Sounds sort of nice; something we can do after tea.

Of course, I'll allow that this may mischaracterize some of these folks; no doubt some of them have no trouble whatsoever cursing people they don't like.

Note: If you look for related YouTube videos, you'll find stuff re C.S. Lewis and the Psalmist's imprecations. Very interesting. Lewis was that rare thing; a free-thinking Christian. He dared to take the evidence of his own eyes, and size it up against the testimony of his own heart. In many ways an admirable and exemplary person.
