"The problem with our churches today is that the lead pastor is some sissy boy who wears cardigan sweaters, has the Carpenters dialed in on his ipod, gets his hair cut at a salon instead of a barber shop and hasn't been to an Ultimate Fighting match, works out on an Elliptical Machine instead of going to isolated regions like Rocky IV in order to harvest lumber with his teeth and generally swished around like Jack from Threes Company whenever Mr. Roper was around."  Seattle mega church pastor Mark Driscoll.
On July 7, 2008 the Wittenburg Door web site carried the above quote from pastor Driscoll.  Mark spoke at a large gathering and delivered other opinions on male prominence in the culture.  Speaking of the Ted Haggard sex scandal, he commented that too many pastor's wives have let themselves go. You might thus blame Haggard's wife for his homosexual flings according to the Seattle pastor.  Mark, also known as the cussing preacher, said wives should stay at home and have children. He says he is so macho that he has been propositioned several times.  He suggests ministers should never stay at church alone, he works at home. He is so virile he claims he wants only male associates around him and he never travels alone.
Judd Wilson wrote an article recently for Faith for All of Life titled, "The Japanese Search for Masculinity."  In the article Wilson laid out his proposal that Japan for all practical purposes lost its male identity by losing the war to the Allies.  When America replaced their emperor worhsip with democracy the old patriarchy was finished in Japan.  The result was:  "It was female suffrage at the point of the bayonet.  And the Japanese neutered themselves on that bayonet.  The Japanese were compelled to retreat to a position of political, military, and cultural emasculation. Decades of anti-military propaganda and strong feelings of collective guilt have crippled the Japanese man't ability to lead."
Faith for All of LIfe, which is the official magazine of Christian Reconstruction, often makes arguments for a male dominated society.  They have referred in crude language to women who might consider teaching in seminaries.  Feminism is viewed as a grave evil.  Southern Baptist spokesman Richard Land stated that it was all right for Sarah Palin to run for office if she got permission from her husband.
Palin's connection to the far right group known as the U.S. Constitution Party has links to an interesting resource center in San Antonio.  The organization is known as Vision Forum.  Catalogues are filled with male children dressed up in military uniforms.  Ads from the periodical inform the consumer that, "Boys can demonstrate faith in the face of battle with Sergeant York...The courageous boy is on a mission from God to take dominion over the earth."  Small boys are shown with toy swords and shields under the heading, "Boys defend your sisters!"
Stephen Turley wrote in the Chalcedon Report:  "It is no wonder men feel they have to become emasculated in order to join the church of our time.  (May 2004, pg. 17)  The connections with military and masculine are eye opening.  The aggressive nature is affiliated with real authentic men.  The use of weapons as a source of male virility are visible endorsements.    What makes this interesting is that many religious right leaders are what writer Frosty Troy calls "Chicken Hawks".   That is, they are fervent advocates for military action but seldom if ever do they or their families participate. Seeing Rocky IV was about as close to any battlefield they ever got.

Vison Forum at www.visionforum.com, carries a great deal of books which glorify military combat.  Recommended reading for boys is for instance, C. A Henry's novels.  One ad reads, ..."ride with Lee through the battlefields of Virginia,"

Those were the guys who had a hernia over Palin's candidacy because she's got the wrong body parts. "To some evangelicals, Palin's career violates biblical teachings" LA Times, 10-1-08 http://tinyurl.com/dgf86w Whackos.

...so a Palin connection to Vision Forum via the Constitution Party is a bit tenuous, and only really comes through the AIP connection. Vision Forum HATES her, srsly.

...George Alfred (GA Henty)? VF has a vast collection of his books. I used to read some of them as a kid. They were great until I discovered Rudyard Kipling and Arthur Conan Doyle. Then after that, they just kind of paled in comparison .

that the only men I have ever encountered who exhibited an obsession with masculinity like Mark Driscoll's have been  closet cases.
Just sayin'.

Long before "chickenhawk" meant armchair warrior, it meant "old guy cruising for underage or barely legal boys".

I've seen Mark Driscoll's videos. What I want to know is what the women he says have "propositioned" him "several times" were smoking when they did so.

I'd also like to know what prompts grown women to stay in churches like his once he begins to spout this male-dominance nonsense. Where and how are we failing women AND men that they don't think critically about the implications of this oppressive, militaristic, and un-Christlike theology?
