Short Takes: Manhattan Declaration Edition
The New York Times reports on the Religious Right's new manifesto, The Manhattan Declaration: A Call of Christian Conscience, which states in part: Because we honor justice and the common good, we will not comply with any edict that purports to compel our institutions to participate in abortions, embryo-destructive research, assisted suicide and euthanasia, or any other anti-life act; nor will we bend to any rule purporting to force us to bless immoral sexual partnerships, treat them as marriages or the equivalent, or refrain from proclaiming the truth, as we know it, about morality and immorality and marriage and the family.
Debra Haffner responds. "The Manhattan Declaration, endorsed by those who are most conservative in America's religious life, is once again a political call against women's moral agency and the rights of lesbian and gay persons dressed up in religious language. These religious leaders would have us believe that they would be forced to provide abortions or bless same sex marriages against their religious principles when these rights are available. Nothing could be further from the truth."
Religion Dispatches: Sarah Posner responds. "It's a new document but an old canard. And it's proof that the culture wars are not only not over; there hasn't even been a truce." |
