Zambian Reconstructionist Backs Milingo

A couple of weeks ago the ex-Roman Catholic Archishop Emmanuel Milingo performed his first mass in Zambia since his excommunication. Catholic clergy advised their faithful to steer clear of the event: Milingo has accepted Rev Moon as "the Messiah sent by God", and the mass was part of Moon's strategy to control a breakaway Catholic church for priests who reject priestly celibacy. A report in the Lusaka Times, however, suggests that Milingo enjoys support from some other Christian leaders:

Christians from different churches sung songs of praise as the Archibishop conducted his healing session.

...Every Nation Church Bishop, John Jere thanked Archibishop MILINGO for bringing transformation in the church.

"Every Nation" is the controversial neo-Pentecostal grouping which I wrote about on Talk to Action here, while Jere has been at the forefront of bringing Christian Reconstructionist ideas into Zambia.

I looked at Christian Reconstructionism in Africa previously here, and I quoted an essay by Brian M. Abshire which mentions Jere in passing:

Peter Hammond, South African missionary to the persecuted church and director of Frontline Fellowship, recently briefed me on one of the most exciting developments in central Africa, the Christian Reconstruction of Zambia.

...The first freely elected President, Frederick Chiluba, promptly testified to the saving power of Christ and called for a day of prayer...When he was asked if he intended writing a new Constitution, Chiluba replied that he didn't have to. It was already written - the Bible. He held up the Bible to the full view of the world press.

... They distributed tens of thousands of Christian Reconstructionist booklets, tracts, Bibles and Christian books in prisons, government departments, schools and churches throughout Zambia...They presented Christian Reconstructionist, pro-life, pro-family, messages on national radio and TV, in schools and churches. Zambia Christian Action was launched under the leadership of Pastor John Jere...

In 2005, Jere defended Christian supremacy in Zambia by referencing US Christian Right talking-points:

Zambia United Christian Action and many Bible believers are in full support of the ["Christian Nation"] declaration. The opposition to Jesus Christ and the gospel was the hostility and enmity of Satan through his agencies; scribes, elders, Pharisees and saducees.

The Devil is using the same pattern against the declaration which does not offend God at all.

The greatest enemy to the Bible and Christianity is secular humanism which is against God, His Law, Bible Ethics and family. Secular humanism begins with, "In the beginning no God..." while Christianity begins with, "In the beginning God..." Former US President George Washington once said, "It is impossible to rightly govern the world without God and the Bible."

Another former US President Andrew Jackson also assured that, "The book (Bible) is the rock on which our republic rests."

...People opposing the declaration of Zambia as a Christian nation want to take God out of our society, communities and in all areas of life.

According to his website:

Bishop John Jere has planted many churches in Zimbabwe, South Africa, Zambia, Botswana, Malawi and Angola. John is still planting more churches in Zambia under Every Nation Church. The recent two church plants in Lukulu is a greater challenge as the areas are in abject poverty.

Jere's prefered means to challenging "abject poverty" is to promote free-market fundamentalism, and he has introduced Zambian government ministers to Douglas J Shaw, a Scottish free-market economist. Jere is also noted for running an orphanage.

Also at the Milingo mass were a number of Anglican clerics, obliging Anglican bishops to make a statement:

Council General Secretary, Rodgers Banda said any priest who attended the healing sessions and mass did so in their personal capacity.

The Bishops were reacting to some of the Anglican priests who were seen on ZNBC television news during Archbishop Milingo's healing sessions and mass Sunday.

Milingo's "healing masses" are known for their extreme exuberance, and an alarmed Vatican brought him to Italy some years ago, where it could keep a close watch over him. It was dissatifaction with this which led to Milingo's astonishing decision to ally with Rev Moon.

Back in 1991 journalist John Cornwall published an interview with Milingo in his book Powers of Darkness, Powers of Light (1991, Viking Penguin, pp. 330-334). Here's a taster:

...The archbishop's eyes stretched wide. 'We are now in the last days of Satan's reign, and he is working overtime through his agents to complete the takeover of the world. His agents are nothing less than the Freemasons who have penetrated to the very heart of Christ's Church. It is the task of the Freemasons to lull Christians, especially priests, into believing that the Devil and his demons don't exist. Satan plays with priests like toys when they don't believe in him.

...'Now Satanism is at its strongest throughout the world. These are the years of the Devil. Black Masses, and blaspheming God, and Judas priests. Before he died Pope Paul VI knew what he had done [post-Vatican II]. He knew it! He had let Satan free within the Church. He said he could smell the stench of smoke around the sanctuary. He said the truth!

...'I was in Holland two weeks ago!' The archbishop was now shouting and spitting again. 'I was praying in Amsterdam from seven-in the morning to half-past two, and the priests were falling like corpses before me. The Devil congratulated me for calling him a liar. A witch came to me and said, "How dare you!" I received a letter from the Devil telling me that I should never dare to speak to the demons like that. It said the devils are more powerful than me and they'll be watching for their chance. But this isn't true, you see.'...
