McCain "Very Honored" by Hagee's Endorsement

Yesterday, John McCain won the endorsement of televangelist John Hagee, one of the country's most prominent Christian Zionist leaders.

Did the Senator:
A) Reject the Reverend's support to protest his suggestion that the Holocaust was part of God's master plan to corral Jews into Israel?
B) Denounce Hagee for describing  the history of the Catholic Church as that of "the anti-Christ" and "a false cult system"? or
C) Stand proudly side-by-side with Hagee in full political embrace? The answer below...

Mr. McCain, who has been on a steady search for support among conservative and evangelical leaders who have long distrusted him, said he was "very honored'' by Mr. Hagee's endorsement. Asked about Mr. Hagee's extensive writings on Armageddon and about what one questioner said was Mr. Hagee's belief that the anti-Christ will be the head of the European Union, Mr. McCain responded that "all I can tell you is that I am very proud to have Pastor John Hagee's support.''

This wasn't just announced through a standard candidate press release but a full-blown news conference, featuring both Hagee and McCain standing together. "Screamin'" Bill Donohue, the combative head of the Catholic League, immediately condemned McCain for accepting Hagee's endorsement. It appears that Bill isn't willing to overlook Hagee's open anti-Catholicism in the interests of political unity.

I almost feel sorry for John McCain.  It's obvious that he knows that Hagee is a raving loon, but he has to make nice otherwise he runs the risk of losing the constituents who like people like Hagee altogether.

I'm not sure it's enough to counteract his repudiation of Cummingham's comments from yesterday.  The wingnuts are still seething over that.

Well, I guess McCain and Hagee can at least compare notes on how they both cheated on their first wives with their eventual, much younger second wives.
