Southern Baptist Leader Wants Government to Accommodate Religion
Speaking at a college founded by W. A. Criswell, Land delivered his views on church and state Jan. 29, 2008. Criswell is known as the famous pastor who stated that the separation of church and state is the creation of some infidel. The church that started this Bible college, named after Criswell, had a famous member who drew the wrath of LBJ. This member was using fictitious churches in Florida to fund a bias political radio program. This the the case that helped bring about the 501c3 ruling. Land proposed in the speech the idea of the majority religious viewpoint being promoted by the state. He suggested that Christians be allowed to display a manger scene on government property. He said that Jewish believers could have a Menorah display as well if they desired. He has advoated in school a Mount Carmel type approach in which religious prayers are offered by different faiths in the school to see whose gets answered. This majority wins viewpoint leaves out the minority opinion. Speaking of school prayer, he bashed the Sante Fe, Texas ruling by the Supreme Court. He believes the female student leading the prayer at the football game was merely expressing majority opinion. Minority opinion views must sit back and take it. The fact that Jewish parents were offended at the Sante Fe school prayers brings little slympahty from Land. Rick Scarborough has gone so far as to state the female student who led the prayer is a genuine Christian martyr. Land stated that the wall Jefferson spoke of in separation only meant citizens had freedom to practice religion without state interference. A position widely held by the religious right. However, other groups like the Baptist Joint Committee have held that the wall of separation was also intended to keep the church out of state affairs. Land claims the ACLU seeks to keep religious expression out of the public square. Again another position held by his cohorts. I have never heard the ACLU state this. It is widely believed by the right that Americans United for Separation of Church and State holds this view even though they have openly denied such more than once. Land is definitely charting new waters former Baptist leaders never dreamed of. Land's belief in government accommodation has brought new definitions to Baptist views on the subject. He had published articles favorable of allowing churches to get state funds for religious programs. He gave the religous liberty award to his friend President Bush. Bush has set new records in government funding of religion. Meanwhile, Land's ally who is president of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, presides right down the highway from Criswell College. Southwestern Seminary has recently rented office space to the Republican Party. Land and Criswell's policies are having an impact on Baptists who once cherished separation.
