Sex in the City-The New Jerusalem
Bishop Long is a black minister in the Atlanta area who is raking in millions with his promise to show his flock the way to financial bliss. In the tape Long stood before his church and proclaimed that God's word is His sperm - and God is potent. He stated that the church is the womb and God does not give dead sperm. While Long is delivering this theological gem the cameras turn to the audience where there are many women standing with hands raised in jubilation. (There were also a few men.) The bishop claimed that preachers are dieing before their time because their sperm is not good. The real job of the preacher is to bring fresh sperm! Long's hermeneutical conclusion is that the problem with the church is lots of foreplay with no conception. Most preaching is dead sperm and the poor womb of the church cannot conceive. The tape reminded me of an old sermon W. A. Criswell was famous for. It was know as Criswell's "Wheel Barrow Sermon". Supposedly Wally Criswell, the late religious right leader who was pastor of Dallas First Baptist, was once waxing eloquently about he topic of sex. He was getting carried away by the subject and lamented the fact that the single men in Dallas were looking for love in all the wrong places. Suggesting that the libido of the single women in his own church was excessive, he commented that these single men needed to marry some of his single ladies. He then promised they would have to cart the men out in wheel barrows by engaging with such women. Criswell's wife was asked in later years about the sermon and tended to change the subject. In Criswell's church was a man known as the wealthiest in the world. His name ws H.L. Hunt and biographers claimed he once sent out aids to find a blond German woman to carry on his superior genes. Believing he had excellent DNA, in Texas ranch land vernacular, Hunt bleieved it was his natural duty to spread it around as much as possible. At his death several secret families came out of hiding to claim some of the fortune. Speaking of reproducing, the man in line to be the next president of the Southern Baptist Convention is head of the oldest seminary in the convention. His name is Dr. Albert Mohler. Dr. Mohler had written in a blog that white women needed to be more fertile to save the nation from its woes. Using sex as a political tool is not new to the religious right. Many in the dominion movement have advocated this for years. They conclude that the best way to save the nation is to have more fertility among Christian women. I have met several couples in my region who believe its their Christian duty to have as many children as possible. A similar program is taught in the valley in our state by Catholic bishops. Global warming and population control to these folks is just pagan tree hugging. Producing converts inside a family controlled by the male figure makes it much easier to gain followers than converting them on the streets. The Southern Poverty Law Center introduced me to Rev. Paul Cameron, a so called expert on sex who works with James Dobson. Cameron has been quoted by politicians, radio hosts and candidates across the nation as an expert on homosexuals. Though his research has been refuted by more scholarly accounts, one item of interest is his project to help keep youth straight. It is little known that Cameron suggests that Christian parents encourage sexual encounters of the close kind in their own homes. He even suggests providing a clean bath tub to used by the adolescent boy and girl in the safe confines of a parent's house. No doubt his pamphlet on such would be welcome by many youth in churches much to the surprise of church elders. One other item of interest regarding such topics is the story I found in Church and State about Rev. Moon. Cult leader Moon is a mover and shaker in the religious right forming alliances with people like Tim LaHaye and Jerry Falwell. Moon beleives he has the cure for homosexuals. He and the ole lady are sleeping in the buff and he wants every village in the world to have at least one couple doing such which will, he claims, cure people from being homosexual. He also has a theory about black people. Moon teaches that black people would turn white if they moved to colder climates. I deducted that if you were black and gay the prospect of sleeping in the raw under such cold conditions might be a therapeutic prospect of grave magnitude. Long before LaHaye became a crystal ball gazer, Tim and wife wrote one of the early sex manuals for Christians. Quite edgy for its time, the LaHaye's work was widely promoted as an erotic guideline for believers. The fact that Jesus taught that in heaven there will be no male nor female might have placed a damper on such evangelistic activity. Thus an alarming prospect that Bishop Long's followers might find heaven disappointing.
