Huckabee Wilts Under Fundamentalist Heat

Last week the organizers of the Celebration of a New Baptist Covenant announced that three prominent Republicans had been invited to participate in the celebration.  The three, Presidential candidate and SBC minister Mike Huckabee of Arkansas, Senator Lindsay Graham of South Carolina and Senator Charles Grassley of Iowa, were to join former Presidents Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and former Vice President Al Gore in a celebration of their Baptist faith and in a covenant to restore an authentic and prophetic voice to the Baptist witness.

Leaders of the Southern Baptist Convention have been opposed to the meeting from the beginning.  It looks like they turned up the heat on Huckabee and advised him to withdraw.  Today, a fundamentalist SBC mouthpiece -- Florida Baptist Witness -- has published a story announcing that Republican Presidential candidate Mike Huckabee is withdrawing from participation in the Celebration of a New Baptist Covenant.
Huckabee says his withdrawal is to protest Carter's harsh critique of President Bush.  
Anyone who knows the heat that SBC leaders put on those who cross their political lines, knows that the heat in the SBC kitchen got too hot for Huckabee.

There has been no dialogue within the Southern Baptist Convention for more than 28 years.  They want the microphone all to themselves and they are known for cutting it off whenever anyone raises a voice in dissent.

Now we will see if the heat gets too hot for Graham, Grassley and the SBC bloggers who met with Carter and Underwood last week.

Good job, Bruce! Clearly, the only thing Huckabee can lead us in is how to lose excess weight, and even then you'd need to start in the morbid obesity category! Whattadeal! The fleecing out process of politics seems to do better than exposing the obvious than to produce the 'best' [or 'better'] candidate(s) in the pack. If this type he represents cannot even rub elbows without meltdown, surely they're more than a bit thin in substance, a point that can be established by a novice! And for the SBC honchos to roll into Washington with the worn-thin plan they used to dominate the moderate Baptists, their fundamentalism is more  transparent than thin is thin!
