Rev Moon Collects Former Heads of State

While the links between Rev Moon and George HW Bush are well-documented, less attention has been paid to Moon's co-opting of other former heads of state. A recent report in the The Seychelles Nation draws attention to one example:
Former President James Mancham leave Seychelles on Monday April 23 on an overseas trip...Mancham will fly to Washington, D.C. to be a guest of honour at the 25th Anniversary banquet of The Washington Times Foundation which will take place at the National Building Museum on the mall next to the US Capitol. Some 1,000 other distinguished leaders and a virtual who's who of Americans, social, political and religious leaders will attend.

Following this celebratory event, Mr Mancham, who is a member of the Presiding Council of the Universal Peace Federation and President of its Global Peace Council, will attend an International Leadership Conference to be held in Washington, D.C. between May 15 - 18 on the theme "American Leadership at a Time of Global Crisis."

(Mancham is also reported as scheduled to attend the opening of the World Future Council, which has no Moon connection)

The Global Peace Council has also wooed a former president of Vanuatu, as was reported in 2005:

Former head of state George Sokomanu is currently in New York, where he is attending the first assembly of the Global Peace Council under sponsorship of the Interreligious and International Federation for World Peace (IIFWP).

...The Peace Council for Oceania was founded in 2004 in Samoa with Mr Sokomanu, Pastor Pakoa Maraki (then secretary general of Vanuatu Christian Council VCC) and then speaker of parliament, Roger Abiut, all representing Vanuatu.

... Sokomanu was not only the former president of the republic of Vanuatu, he has also held the post of Secretary General of the South Pacific Community (SPC). Currently, in addition to other duties, he is serving as the chairman of ambassadors for Peace Vanuatu...

Meanwhile, a Unificationist website notes the involvement of a former Albanian head of state:

...Prof. Dr. Rexhep Mejdani (Former President of Albania) who is member of Global Peace Council was invited to the stage to welcome Father and Mother Moon to Albania. He is very popular politician in our country therefore his word was very important. In a surprising finish, he concluded his remarks by reciting the Crown of Glory, a poem written by Father Moon when he was just fifteen. Dr. Mejdani himself had even tried to translate it and make it fit to Albanian language.

An ad for a book about Moon, entitled Peace King, rounds up a few other presidential admirers:

Presidents, prime ministers, scientists, Nobel laureates, religious leaders, novelists and men and women from all walks of life and from all corners of the world share how they have been impacted by coming to know Rev. Dr. Sun Myung Moon, the Peace King... This project was inspired by the suggestion made by President of the Republic of India, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.

..."Rev. Moon is a teacher. But not an ordinary teacher. Rev. Moon is a messenger. But not an ordinary messenger. The truth is that the Rev. Moon is a prophet of our time."
Kenneth Kaunda
President, Zambia (1964-1991)

..."Rev. Moon's call for peace though religion is something of great nuance and profundity. We are deeply fortunate for the chance to hear him and observe his life-long struggle for world peace."
H.E. Abdurrahman Wahid
President, Indonesia (1999-2001)

Prime ministers are also part of the vision - the late UK PM Ted Heath was famously an admirer, and recently former Zambian PM Malimba Masheke was on hand to greet Maria Sung, the wife of former Archbishop Milingo, to his country. Masheke chairs Moon's International Inter-religious Federation for World Peace.

An interesting 2001 essay that looks at Moon's NGO strategies can be seen here.

That report from Vanuatu gives an alternative transliteration for Moon, which is worth being aware of: "Sun Myung Mun" The paper calls him "a Korean religious leader and tireless worker for world peace".

I had never seen that spelling before.
For those of us who like to keep track of the Reverend's works  and pomps, this is most valuable information.
