American Theocratic Visions from the Past

The late James Kennedy, a leading promoter of the Theocratic state in America, quoted Francis Schaeffer Sept. 4, 2004 on TBN.  Schaeffer wanted Christians to go get involved in society so "our culture would not go to hell".  Kennedy praised Calvin and wanted to return the nation to Calvin's Geneva claiming that in 1850 all newspapers in the U.S. were run by Christians.  Kennedy failed to mention Calvin used the state to execute dissenters.

The classic work on the old Religous Right in America is UNDER COVER.  In the book Roy Carlson tells the story of Norman Vincent Peale's connection in sharing the platform with native Fascist Elizabeth Dilling in l938.  Peale, author of the POWER OF POSITIVE THINKING, had a great deal of influence on Robert Schuller and probably Joel Olsteen.  Peale was on the board of H.L. Hunt's organization when the original laws on 501c3 tax exemption were established.  Hunt was using "religious" programs for decidely political purposes.  All historic roads regarding 501c3 lead back to the Hunt family.  Peale was a big backer of Richard Nixon's candidacy.
At times ministers have found strange links between public figures and ethical values.  Methodist minister Bill Laawson delivered the eulogy for Ken Lay comparing him to Martin Luther King according to www.theglobeandmail.com 7/13/2006  It was a reminder of the connection the Easthaven Baptist Church had to my old fellow church member Bernie Ebbers.  They gave him a standing ovation when in church he announced their deacon was not a crook. The church, located in Brookhaven, Mississippi, is the city that was the national headquarters for the White Citizen's Council.  Ebbers along with Lay ripped off investors in the famous national CEO scandals.
Rev. Moon has come up with the cure for being gay.  Though Moon is known as a  cult leader, never the less, he has a strong standing with the Religious Right.  Moon, according to Church and State May 2004, pg. 14, stated that he and the wife are sleeping in the nude and recommentds at least one couple in every village in the world do so to cure people from being homosexual.  He also stated that if black people went to live at the North Pole in a few generations they would be white.  Such stories serve as a curious vision of a world fashioned by some religious leaders.

The fact that Kennedy could say this and not get called on his historical falsification reflects a widespread historical ignorance among his flock and the American public at large.

Sadly, I fear that Kennedy would have agreed with Calvin's use of state authority to execute religious offenders. That is the modus operandi of the dominionists.

For an antidote to Kennedy, read Garry Wills's recent book, Head and Heart.

Kennedy used to be known in the seventies as an evangelist.  He was a popular writer for a how to book on reaching people for the church.  The same was true of Robinson who was an evangelist.  They, like Rick Scarborough, left this field to enter the arena of secular politics. With leaders of this caliber moving in this direction it helped lead several pastors from an emphasis on reaching the unchurched to reaching the unregistered.
