On Mercer University's Baptist Studies Bulletin
Every issue begins with Walter Shurden's monthly "I Believe" column. Shurden is the most prolific historian among moderate Baptists. This month's column on "Differences that Blind" is about the meeting of key Baptist leaders across the country that was hosted by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter. Shurden was a participant. His is the first insider's account of the meeting to be published. He was also the first to publish the "North American Baptist Covenant" that the leaders signed and the first to publish a picture of the participants. From beginning to end, every month, the Baptist Studies Bulletin provides a forum for the diversity and scholarship that highlights the best of moderate, mainstream of Baptist life. Theirs are the voices that the Southern Baptist Convention has been trying for twenty-five years to silence.
Each month the BSB ends with editor Bruce Gourley's "In Response to" column. This month's column on "The War on Christians" clearly identifies the source of the attack on American Christianity. Here's a quote: Tragically, Scarborough and DeLay's brand of grossly misguided theology is echoed by the leaders of the Southern Baptist Convention and preached from many pulpits in America today. Even more tragically, underneath their chicken-little rhetoric lies a real war against Christianity in America.
