Taking action: Stop sale of baby-beating books!

A few days ago, I wrote a story in regards to the baby-beating manuals published by the Pearls being linked to the death of a child and detailing how this sort of thing is distressingly common in the dominionist community.

Looking on Amazon's review pages, I actually found a way people can put the "action" in Talk2Action in a big way.

Taking action here is threefold, and is in part repeating the efforts of one site (which I'll note to as well), but if enough of us write some real action could be taken.

Anyways, the action bits:

a) Write Amazon and other bookstores selling the books and note they are selling an unsafe product.

Amazon:

I noticed that Amazon's review submission form has a note that if a product is seen as unsafe to report it not only to the CPSC but to Amazon as well.  This can be done at product-safety@amazon.com for those interested.

Links from Amazon.com for promoters of baby-beating manuals:

Pearls' books
Ezzos' books
Tedd Tripp's books
Roy Lessin's books

And yes, feel free to link to the "Death By Chastening Rod" article--I largely designed it as an informative resource for people who are unfamiliar with religiously motivated child abuse.  EzzoInfo is also a good resource, as is Stop The Rod.

Barnes and Noble:

The closest thing I can see is a link to request corrections; corrections@barnesandnoble.com may be an email to try.  gzephirin@bn.com is also listed as a contact for "content concerns".

Barnes and Noble's links for the Ezzo's books
one of only links available for Pearls' books
few links available for Tedd Tripp's books
links to Roy Lessin's books

Borders:

Borders presently partners with Amazon, so the Amazon info should be relevant.

Powell's (the bookseller Talk2Action partners with):

webmaster@powells.com and help@powells.com are potential contacts; press@powells.com may also be worth contacting.

Powell's links to Ezzo books
stub page for the Pearls' books (not in stock at the moment)
link to Ted Tripp's manuals
Roy Lessin's books

(Additions of bookstores are appreciated.)

b) Write the Consumer Product Safety Commission on both the books in particular and the promotion of "chastening rods" in general.

Whilst I'm aware I'm probably in part duplicating the efforts of Stop The Rod (which is leading petition drives to stop the sale of "chastening rods"), in this case direct writing to the CPSC may be better (as there is a risk that with one petition turned in they may count this as one report of an unsafe product).

The CPSC may be written at info@cpsc.gov and, again, you can use the Amazon links as well as ezzo.info, Stop The Rod, and my original article as reference.  You will need to supply contact info to the CPSC; postal address should probably suffice.

UPDATE: As of 27 March 2006 reportedly Powell's and Barnes and Noble are no longer carrying the Pearls' baby-beating manuals. We salute them for their action.

Amazon (despite having a formal policy allowing persons to report on dangerous products) has so far refused to withdraw the books from its online catalogues, claiming censorship concerns. A formal campaign to contact Amazon re the concerns has begun thanks to Stop The Rod and nospank.net and calls for a formal boycott of Amazon and other booksellers (including "homeschool" correspondence-school retailers) still selling the books are underway.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission--bizzarely--has replied to complaints (both regarding the Pearls' books and to the marketing of "chastening rods" and similar devices) by recommending the Federal Communications Commission be contacted.

Display:
Not a comment (although I do thank you for putting this out there)  but a question - Is anyone aware of any other children who have died because of the Pearls 'advice'?

THANKS!

Mary

To my knowledge this is the first widely reported incident of death directly attributed to the Pearls' books, but there are multiple reports of child abuse investigations (including cases where parental custody rights were terminated) related to the Pearls' books and advise.
