Renee in Ohio, writing at Street Prophets has big news about an interfaith effort to counter the Christian Right in Ohio. The group, "We Believe!" launches on March 14th. They have a 6 point action agenda:

1. We will work on Voter Turn-out and an Absentee Voter Initiative with the goal of clergy turning out 80% of their members.

2. We will work on an initiative to Give Children, Poor and Homeless People a Voice and Vote.

3. We will work on an initiative to Preach on Issues of Religion and Social Justice in Our Society.

4. We will establish a Website and maintain it.

5. We will work on an initiative to Create Public Events for "WE BELIEVE!"

6. We will publish a Book of Sermons around these topics.

The Wall of Separation reports that Christian Rightists in the Georgia legislature want to amend the state constitution to allow state-based funding of religious groups and to legalize religious discrimination:

The Georgia House of Representatives is considering a bill that gravely threatens separation of church and state. HR 1345 would amend Article I, Section II of Georgia's Constitution, which governs religious freedom. This constitutional provision has protected the separation of church and state for 229 years. The safeguards that have helped religion flourish in Georgia since 1777 must not be abandoned.

This bill would actually repeal the current language that provides a higher level of protection for religious liberty than the First Amendment. Erasing this extra measure of protection is part of a nationwide effort to allow government funds to flow to religious organizations without requiring those religious organizations to follow the same rules as secular organizations that receive government funds.

Removing the constitutional language that prevents public money from going to religious organizations would open the door to voucher subsidies for religious schools and allow the state to abdicate its role in providing social services for needy Georgians to religious groups. Furthermore, religious organizations would be able to discriminate in their hiring and firing in programs funded by the taxpayers
