Promoted from the diaries -- fc

In a remarkably candid interview with The Jewish Week Rev. Louis Sheldon admitted that he and "a lot" of other people had known about Ted Haggard's homosexuality for "a while" before the story broke:

Then, as if things could not get worse, there was the disgrace of Sheldon's own friend and colleague, Rev. Ted Haggard, the Colorado mega-church leader and president of the National Association of Evangelicals, an even bigger pillar of Republican support on the Christian right. Sheldon disclosed that he and "a lot" of others knew about Haggard's homosexuality "for awhile ... but we weren't sure just how to deal with it."

Months before a male prostitute publicly revealed Haggard's secret relationship with him, and the reverend's drug use as well, "Ted and I had a discussion," explained Sheldon, who said Haggard gave him a telltale signal then: "He said homosexuality is genetic. I said, no it isn't. But I just knew he was covering up. They need to say that."

While it's not really surprising that Haggard's friends would keep his revelations secret, the fact that they kept it secret for so long while allowing him to continue in such a prominent role within their evangelical movement makes them fully complicit in Haggard's hypocrisy.

And it would be interesting to know how much Dobson knew before making statements about "waiting for the full facts to come out."

What is also interesting is Haggard's argument that his homosexuality is genetic.   Sure, he might just be in denial, but if he really does believe that then there may be hope that he can come to terms with and make peace with his sexuality.

Check my comment on your previous post on Haggard. Discussed in some detail why the leaders are having so much trouble with this. It undermines all their theories about homosexuality and they have nothing to offer because their useless (and even harmful) "treatments" are based on flawed understanding. These aspects of the tragedy need exposure in the popular press. If people are helped to connect the dots, it would be the death knell of the reparative therapy and ex-gay movements. Dobson would have a very difficult time peddling his Love Won Out road show.

Ted Haggard is partially correct, and it indeed is a sign of hope for him if he accepts the reality of his situation.  People can and do change- I know I did over the years- from being conservative to strongly liberal.

Dominionists reject evolution- but the evidence is very strong that homosexuality is a largely genetically driven adaptive strategy to population pressures.  Scientifically, it seems to have both genetic and culturally driven aspects (and the last does NOT imply some sort of choice on the individual's part).

Getting away from the scientific aspect, the next question is ethical and moral- do we punish people who have no choice in this matter?  Or do we recognize that the evidence is that it is a very natural thing, and as I said adaptive to population pressures?

I think that part of the problem is that the fundies think that all homosexuals are hedonistic.  That is stereotyping, and the evidence shows that like most stereotypes, it is wrong.
