Right Wing, Wrong Bird
The recent selection of Joel Hunter as the new president is a sign that the new Christian Coalition is serious about its new direction. Hunter is the author of "Right Wing, Wrong Bird: Why the Tactics of the Religious Right Won't Fly with Most Conservative Christians." This is how the Christian Coalition announced the arrival of its new president:
Dr. Hunter, a longtime conservative who seeks to build consensus across party lines, approaches politics in a biblical and balanced manner. His interest in politics began when he was a student at Ohio University in the 1960's. Protecting life and standing for biblical values has always been the Coalition's central focus and will continue under Dr. Hunter's leadership. "I look forward to building upon the successes under Roberta's leadership and expanding our mission to concern itself with the care of creation, helping society's marginalized, human rights/religious issues and compassion issues," says Dr. Hunter. It seems clear that the Christian Coalition although severely limited in its resources, is trying to differentiate itself from the much larger Christian Right organizations like Focus on the Family, Family Research Council, and the American Family Association.
