What's Up with Tony Perkins?

Blogger DefCon Clark thinks there's "somthing fishy going on" regarding the next Justice Sunday. You remember -- those rallies organized by Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council and James Dobson of Focus on the Family in favor of Bush's most extreme judicial nominees.  But for all the appearances of a raw exercise of power, all may not be as it seems.
He writes:
First they quietly changed the date from Dec 4, to Jan. 8. Secondly, despite massive promotion by the religious right for the first two events, there hasn't been a peep from anyone regarding its most recent incarnation. All we know is the date, the place (Greater Exodus Baptist Church in Philadelphia) and a limited who (thus far only Tony Perkins, James Dobson, and Greater Exodus' Pastor, Herbert Lusk have been announced as speakers).
This may be all about to change however. It seems that ...[today], Fri. Dec 2nd, Tony Perkins is holding a Pastor-Only breakfast at the People for People building in Philadelphia.

Clark has Perkins' letter posted over at Street Prophets.

You're not the only one smelling a definite skunk (no offense to skunks, whom I understand make wonderful companions once descented).

The first two Justice Sundays were heavily publicised, the only two things that seemed to be hard to find out were the TV networks carrying it live (and I was able to find THAT after some searching--it's via a dominionist (yes, literally, as it's in their name even) "pro-Christian" DBS provider called Sky Angel/Dominion Satellite (I've posted a bit of scuttlebutt about them and their involvement in the previous Justice Sundays here).

There is not a peep on the FRC website announcing the Justice Sundays (http://www.justicesunday.com).  We probably won't know until late December if Sky Angel will be broadcasting Justice Sunday III or not (but they DO keep their schedules online, and one does not have to subscribe to a specific pay-per-view event to watch Justice Sunday stuff, just subscribe to their DBS service or find a satellite store carrying it :3)

I'm thinking one of three things:

a) Unwelcome attention has been brought on the dominionist movement and they are trying their best to conduct meetings in stealth, much like the days of the CNP/COR et al.  (Both Justice Sunday I and Justice Sunday II were met with both counterprotests at local churches and complaints with the IRS regarding the tax exempt status of the churches they were held at; Tom Delay and Bill Frist, who have appeared at Justice Sunday events in past, are now both being investigated for violations of elections laws specifically relating to nonprofit groups.  FRC's sister groups Focus on the Family is also now being investigated by the IRS, and Family Research Council (and nearly all other dominionist activist groups) share the same tax exempt status.)

b) They are planning something particularly big and particularly nasty that they do NOT want to get out in the public, probably including planning illegal activity (if so, it may be particularly important for someone to get a Sky Angel feed to monitor and record this).

c) Both.

there was a state constitutional amendment on the ballot to forbid gay marriage. Since same-sex marriage was already illegal under statutory law, the supporters of this amendment depicted it publicly as a safeguard against legalization of same by Texas's nonexistent horde of activist liberal judges.
The religious conservative movement flexed its muscles to get this thing through the Legislature, which also appeared eager to distract attention from the fact that their regular session and two special sessions accomplished very little, if anything, regarding the many practical problems faced by this huge state. Once the Legislature had passed it and the amendment was placed on the statewide ballot, however, the campaign supporting it largely dropped below the radar. The governor met repeatedly in closed-door sessions with groups of conservative religious men. Sermons repeatedly touted the amendment. Sporadically, leaflets supporting it appeared on car windshields in various Texas cities. But there was very little campaigning in public, relatively speaking.

Alito is their man. Maybe he's not their number one pick, but he's up there, and more importantly, Dobson, Perkins and the rest probably think that he can be confirmed without too big of a fight.

At this point further rants from the Justice Sunday crowd can only serve to put more focus on Alito's very conservative views on abortion and other social issues, and they know that. Best to keep quiet and hope nobody notices.

I suspect that part of the reason for the move is because the Senate has moved the hearings for the next Supreme Court nominee, Samuel Alito, to January.

One of the objectives of the event is certainly going to be Alito's confirmation. That nomination may be in trouble as a result of Alito's statements regarding abortion -- he has pretty much said that he believes that Roe vs. Wade should be overturned. There is a threatened fillibuster in the Senate, and the next Justice Sunday needs to be scheduled to take advantage of those events.

My guess is that things are not settled because they are still leaving the schedule tenatively open. They may want to move it again.

Sometimes I think that people do forget what they stood for in the first place after they have gained some power. And this can be observed in internet providers by zip code most of the cases. In such situations, they will be acting all opposite of what they were against.
